Apples and Oranges is a business simulation designed to help management teams develop an understanding of how the flow of knowledge and both tangible and intangible resources affects the company’s performance.
Apples and Oranges (Knowledge Version) specifically address knowledge issues within organisations and provides an excellent learning tool for organisations wishing to derive greater value from their intangible assets and who wish to develop a strategy which derives value from both the explicit and tacit knowledge within the organisation.
Teamwork
Working in teams, participants manage intangible assets and knowledge flows to improve the value of the business. By comparing the effects of management decisions in different functional areas – effectively comparing Apples & Oranges – they begin to develop an understanding of the role knowledge plays in determining business success. In addition to shedding light on the value of knowledge within the business they also learn to use key financial indicators (ROA, ROE, and others) to monitor the health of their knowledge business.
Experiential Learning
Apples & Oranges is a powerful experiential learning experience which has been used successfully at various levels in an organisation from senior management teams through to middle managers and also on graduate development programmes. It provides an excellent foundation for a wide range of knowledge management initiatives and as a key influencing tool is developing knowledge focussed strategies that actually work and achieve buy-in from key knowledge workers.
Existing Users
Apples & Oranges has an excellent track record and has been used by a significant number of the world's leading companies including:
Motorola, Phillips, Microsoft, Compaq, Daimler-Benz, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Proctor & Gamble
Over the years a variety of different business model versions have been developed including; Manufacturing, Service, Retail/Distribution, Knowledge and Healthcare.
EKGs main focus is on the Knowledge version but we also use other versions to support the work we do with clients - indeed use of different versions within the same organisation can lead to useful collaboration between key parts of the business.
